The Royal Oak is a small family run hotel ideally situated beyond the ‘Jaws of Borrowdale’, six miles south of Keswick.

Once an 18th Century farmhouse and former miner’s tavern, the Royal Oak has been providing accommodation for visitors and walkers for over one hundred years. It has been run by the same family since 1970 and is still the perfect base from which to explore the beauty of the northern Lake District.

The Royal Oak is a very Walkers Welcome hotel and we’re proud to have qualified for our Cumbria Tourism – Walkers Welcome Award.

The location of the house is particularly striking with commanding views of the Borrowdale Fells. It is ideal base for a walking holiday with easy access to some of the best routes in the Lake District.

Our restaurant serves excellent quality home-made food using the best local and seasonal ingredients.

We are a 1840s coach house family run Bed and Breakfast with a large car park. We have 3 rooms, a double, a king and a super king with a sofa bed option that can sleep 3 individually. All en-suite. These rooms come with a very hearty breakfast. Fresh fruit salad, croissants and locally sourced Full English. Glutens, Vegetarian and Vegans are all fully catered for.

We also have a separate self contained “Nook”, which can accommodate 2 people as a couple or split twin beds. The Nook has its own private small courtyard and areas for drying boots and storing bikes.

Many guests park up and leave the car for duration. Castlerigg stone circles and Wall Crag are only 1.5 miles away. Great for sunrise or sunset photos!
